WESTERN CONFERENCE PREDICTIONS 08-09

Posted in Calgary, predictions by amanoidopera on October 7, 2008

3. Calgary Flames

The Northwest Division is always the hardest fought in the NHL, and this year will be no different. Jarome Iginla will be the difference maker this year again. With a strong defensive corps, and one of the best goaltenders in the west, there isn’t much weakness on the Flames.

The Offense:

Iginla will score 50 again. There is little to make me believe otherwise. Other then that the offense will be ok. Cammalleri was a good pick up, and he should thrive in Calgary. The rest of the offense is mostly punch you in the mouth and then, maybe, score a goal. But that’s intimidating enough to make most players shy away from physical contact. Will Todd Bertuzzi recover in this red jersey? No, no he won’t.

The Defense:

Robyn Regehr and Dion Phaneuf will make other teams cringe with both their defense and offense. Adrian Aucoin can still quarterback the powerplay and will be looking to increase his numbers this year. Everyone else is just big and mean. The Calgary defense will be a force in the Northwest.

The Goaltending:

Miikka Kiprusoff had a bit of an off year last year, which would have been considered a great year by many other teams. If he can get his game back then Calgary will undoubtedly win the Northwest. If he continues to slide then there may not be enough offense on the team to compensate. However, the chances of that are slim indeed and teams looking to topple Calgary shouldn’t count on it.

The Fans:

Hockey fans, as a group of people, tend to be very agreeable. In most arenas around Canada and the States hockey fans are so glad to see another hockey fan that they’re not too concerned about who you’re cheering for, only that you are supporting their favorite sport. Calgary fans… not so much. If you happen to be wearing blue in the sea of red that is the Saddledome, better watch what you say. Still, you gotta give them credit for being so dedicated to their team, just give them credit from a distance.

Ryan Clowe will be the Sharks’ breakout star this year (incidentally you can’t be a breakout star twice). Campbell wasn’t that good in the playoffs but he was the key to their late season “surge” (dammit, McCain has totally ruined that word). The Sharks don’t need another guy who disappears in the postseason.
